Couple days ago my store got in copies of the Klonoa remake for the Wii, and I remember wondering about the game when it had first come out. Now I've seen some responses from fans of the original pointing out the new English VA is just terrible, the model redesign is chunky, and the animation is stiff.

Any confirmation on that? I was a bit curious about this one since I never played the original.

Uhh all I've heard is that if you haven't played the original at all and have an interest in Klonoa, you should get this game. I'd chalk up the fans' response something akin to THEY CHANGED IT NOW IT SUCKS.

Oh my...

This game is delightful. So simple, so whimsical, and what at first seemed like another page from the shounen book came right back and baked my poor heart a batch of bittersweet cookies. And I ate them all.

Also, they changed it and now it's probably a lot better off. The English voice of Klonoa by Eric Stiff is surprising well done; obviously guyish, just the right amount of catness, a touch of casual, and come the final scene I was utterly convinced. The rest of the English cast was top notch as well. I turned it to Phantomilian after the fact and while Klonoa's gibberish voice is quite well I resist breaking out into a fit of laughter whenever anyone else spoke. It's clear the supporting cast didn't adhear to Phantomilian grammar.

Well, I ended up buying the game and finished it yesterday.

It's a touch on the short side, but it is quality through and through. The visuals are outstandingly pretty (pro tip: you don't need high poly counts to make a game look gorgeous), the music is excelent, and the bitter-sweet story is well told. Even the puzzles in the game are well thought out, using the action platformer base for some very interesting (and occasionally controller snappingly frustrating) ideas.

Honestly, this game completely exceeded my expectations and is one of those much needed good games for the Wii. I'm sorry to say that it will likely fade into obscurity, but I will recommend it none the less.

One other thing of note is the control options. BLESS YOU, Namco-Bandai, for actually USING not just the Classic Controller but also the Game Cube controller! I was starting to think that only first party Nintendo games would bother to do that!

I rented it a few days ago. My only previous experience with Klonoa came from the GBA game Empire of Dreams, which I unfortunately never finished. I might have to find a ROM of it and actually beat it, though, because I thoroughly enjoyed this game.

The voice acting was sort of a weird experience for me. At first I was extremely skeptical of the English voice acting because I was so used to the original "Wahoo!" But after playing through the game with the voice acting on English, I found it to be acceptable. I'm still not entirely sold on Klonoa's English voice, though- while it gets the job done, it doesn't seem like it fits the character all that well. It's a little too Sonic the Hedgehog for my tastes. On the other hand, the Phantomile voice track takes a bit of getting used to if only because of how bizarre it is, but it fits the whimsy of the world and has the Klonoa voice I know and love.

It's not a very difficult game, save for a few moments in the last few levels that required a bit of careful platforming, but after finishing the main story there are several unlockables that add some much-needed challenge. The final unlockable vision is ridiculously difficult when compared to the rest of the game. I'm not sure if it's possible to finish it without going through most of your lives- it's a good thing they practically throw them at you in that level! I haven't tried the Mirror Mode at all, and I probably won't be able to since I need to return the game today, but I'd imagine playing through the levels backwards can be pretty difficult.

The ending caught me by surprise. I knew that it was going to be fairly emotional because of a few mentions Nintendo Power made to it a while back, but that didn't keep me from being surprised.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All in all I found it fantastic! If you aren't sure about Klonoa, it would be a great idea to try renting it, since you could probably beat it thoroughly over the rental period. I'm hoping that the second game in the series will also get the Wiimake treatment, but considering that Klonoa has never really done all that well in the U.S. that doesn't seem very likely... I can at least borrow Klonoa 2 from a friend of mine who has the game, though, so it's all good!

OH, you're talking about that tower, right? Yeah, that section was pretty intense! And it is nice how they throw so many lives at you along the way. The ending of that is mostly funny, though.

As for the Mirror Mode, that's where the Ultra Hard difficulty is. I'm serious. Go Mirror Mode, go to the first level and get to the spot where Balue first appears. There's a little portal in that room.

I couldn't get through that ONE ROOM. I used up all my remaining lives from a full playthrough and the tower combined.
